Losing ground for the first time in five weeks, the S&P 500 Index (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC ) lost less than 1 point, or less than 0.1%, to close at 1,649 as stocks head into the long weekend. Though posting slight losses, U.S. equities fared far better than most international markets, many of which fell following weak industrial data from China earlier this week. Doing their best impression of weak foreign stocks, these three companies ended as the worst in the S&P Friday.
Five-day periods just don't get much bleaker than the one GameStop (NYSE: GME ) experienced this week. Today's 10.8% decline brought weekly losses to 19.2%, asMicrosoft'sXbox One release was the initial downward catalyst for the stock and the new console will likely make the majority of the used-game industry out of business. Today's slip comes after GameStop announced quarterly results. Sales and income both fell, foreshadowing what could be a depressing future for shareholders.

Earnings and valuation continue to look attractive
Alaska Airlines continues to impress investors with each earnings report. In its most recent filing for Q4 2013, the company reported record earnings of $78 million, a 68% increase over the prior year's quarter. The positive earnings were driven primarily by a 7% increase in revenue. When a company can increase earnings so significantly, it can offset a rise in the stock in terms of relative valuation, and we see this phenomenon at work with Alaska Airlines. When we reviewed the company's stock in November, ALK traded at 11.3 times trailing 12-month earnings. Since then, even after its price appreciation of more than one-fourth of its value, the airline's P/E ratio has remained in the same ballpark, at 13.0. This compares favorably to the peer group we previously compared ALK to. Currently, Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV ) trades at 22.5 trailing 12-month earnings, and the P/E ratios of the rest of the group are as follows:Spirit Airlines-- 25.3,Republic Airways Holdings-- 19.1, andJetBlue Airways (NASDAQ: JBLU ) -- 17.6. Thus, relative to its competitors, Alaska still looks cheap. - [By Michele Lerner, The Motley Fool]
Alan Diaz/APAmerican Airlines did better at staying on schedule last year than it did in 2012, when it accused pilots of a work slowdown. DALLAS -- A big drop in customer complaints helped U.S. airlines post their best ratings ever even though more flights were late and more bags were mishandled, according to a report released Monday by university researchers. Virgin America topped the ratings, and three regional airlines scored at the bottom. Among the four biggest airlines, Delta Air Lines (DAL) ranked best followed by Southwest (LUV), American (AAL) and United (UAL), according to researchers from Wichita State University and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The researchers have graded airlines since 1991 on government figures for on-time performance, mishandled bags, bumping passengers, and complaints filed with the U.S. Department of Transportation. Their key findings: On-Time Performance: Airlines operated 78.4 percent of their flights on time in 2013, down from 81.8 percent in 2012. Best: Hawaiian Airlines (HA); worst: American Eagle. Only two airlines improved: American Airlines and United. Bag Handling: The rate of lost, stolen or delayed bags rose 5 percent. Best: Virgin America; worst: American Eagle. Bumping: The rate of bumping passengers from flights fell 8 percent. Best: JetBlue Airways (JBLU); worst: SkyWest (SKYW). Complaints: Consumer complaints to the government dropped 15 percent in 2013 after rising 20 percent the year before. Best: Southwest Airlines; worst: Frontier (RJET). One of the report's authors, Wichita State business professor Dean Headley, credited the drop in complaints partly to United Airlines. The company suffered several computer-network outages and grounded hundreds of flights in 2012 when it combined the United and Continental computer networks after a merger, but "got their act together" in 2013, he said. Headley said the drop in complaints might also reflect "a certain amount of resignation" that "it's neve

What a ride it’s been for investors inTetra Technologies (TTI) today.
Agence France-Presse/Getty ImagesShares of Tetra Technologies traded down as much as 16% this morning after the oil & gas services company reported a profit of 6 cents not including Maritech and other unusual items, missing analyst forecasts for 19 cents. Tetra Technologies also said it would make between 50 cents and 60 cents during fiscal 2014, below forecasts for 66 cents.
At 2:38 p.m., however, Tetra was trading down just 0.8% at $10.88. RBC’s Kurt Hallead and team explain why:
Tetra Technologies rallied after starting the day at -15%. We think there was an overreaction to the headline miss andTetra Technologies’ core operating business results, along with 2H14 guidance, were in line with expectations. Moving forward, the company has some key catalysts on the horizon that should lead to significantly improved operating performance and investor awareness. Key Catalysts:
1. Get Maritech (E&P P&A liability in GoM) off the books. Ideally by 3Q. Once this is done,Tetra Technologies may implement a dividend or share repo program.
2. Broaden Production Testing customer base, which should lead to a ramp in margins.
3. Increase scale of Compressco through M&A, along with awareness of the MLP’s value to Tetra Technologies.
4. Sell the offshore services business to simplify business structure.
Shares of Tetra Technologies are down 12% in 2014.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Ben Levisohn]
Shares of Heartland Express (HTLD) rose today despite being cut by Stifel Nicolaus for valuation reasons.
Bloomberg NewsShares of Heartland Express have gained 50% this year, trumping the 38% rise in Con-Way (CNW) and the 29% advance in J.B. Hunt Transport Services (JBHT) but lagging Old Dominion Freight Lines (ODFL) and Swift Transportation (SWFT).
That big gain was enough for Stifel’s John Larkin say no mas and cut his rating on Heartland Express. They explain why:
Downgrading from Buy to Hold as the company’s shares appear fully and fairly valued. In fact, shares have recently traded through our 12-month fair value estimate of $19 (or 16.0x our 2015 EPS estimate of $1.15 plus ~$0.68 per share NPV of future cash tax benefits).
Rating change is primarily valuation based as well as from our view that most transportation equities are trading ahead of the still mediocre underlying freight market fundamentals.
BB&T’s Thomas Albrecht and team, who upgraded Heartland Express to Buy from Hold yesterday, explain why they think the stock will do just fine regardless of the economy:
Heartland is an intriguing play upon both a slow-growth economy and a rapidly growing one (along with tight capacity). Many carriers are only able to thrive in the latter environment. With HTLD we believe that even in a sluggish economy it has a self-generating EPS story through the integration and growth of Gordon. Q3’13, a very difficult quarter for TL carriers, saw HTLD post a 79.3% OR versus 83.3%.
The timing of the Gordon deal seems ideal, similar to the Great Coastal acquisition in mid-2002. Back then the TL market was stabilizing, but had yet to really take off, which occurred in the back half of 2003. Those 4-5 quarters allowed HTLD to assess customers, integrate operations, consolidate facilities and get ready for the next cycle. By the time that occurred HTLD was ready to take advantage of the capacity
