A new study made waves last week when it announced that it could, in a sense, predict which way the Dow Jones Industrials� (DJINDICES: ^DJI ) would go by analyzing�Google (NASDAQ: GOOG ) search terms. The Warwick Business School in England and Boston University's department of physics' study,�published�in Nature's Scientific Reports, showed that investing in a hypothetical portfolio by analyzing terms in Google Trends from 2004 to 2011 yielded the researchers a 326% return.
But before you open up a new browser tab and call up Google Trends, let's talk about how this might not be the best investing strategy.
True science, false expectations
It's not wide to dismiss the merits of science, but it's smart to put the study's findings in context. Researchers used 98 search terms over the course of seven years to determine whether the Dow would go up or down after certain search terms were used.
Let's think about this for a moment. They studied 98 different words varying from "happy" to "politics" over the course of seven years 颅颅to find how they may affect the Dow -- that's a pretty large amount of data for any investor to consider. Gathering all that data, sifting through it, and then trying to make investment decisions off it would make reading an annual 10-K seem like a walk in the park.

PowerGuard is a non-penetrating roof-mounted solar panel that delivers electricity while insulating and protecting the roof membrane from ultraviolet rays and thermal degradation. Yet, Capstone has a couple of threats. One is that if microturbine solutions become popular enough, General Electric and Caterpillar might well start modifying their larger-scale high-efficiency power-generation offerings toward the smaller-customer market. The other could come from the solar industry. With the rise in residential and small-commercial solar installations thanks to the success of SolarCity (NASDAQ: SCTY ) and SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR ) in providing easy financing, demand for Capstone's microturbines could come under pressure as solar costs continue to decline.

Schadenfreude's in season
Not everyone's opposed to the law, necessarily. For example, Xcel Energy (NYSE: XEL ) is already working to expand its portfolio of wind-generated power in the state, and two years ago, it put into operation a 19-megawatt solar farm in cooperation with SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR ) . As a so-called "investor-owned utility," Xcel is already subject to a target of 30% renewables use by 2020 -- so a law making its rural rivals hit a 20% target probably didn't upset Xcel all that much. - [By Maxx Chatsko]
Perhaps residential solar power would become much more common, thus reducing your energy bills. Technological hurdles stunted solar's rise in the past decade as wind soared to the top, but the gap may be closing. A new report released this week showed that the United States added a record 723 MW of solar capacity in the first quarter. Residential solar added 164 MW and grew 53% year over year -- the largest growth of any segment. Market forces are certainly pointing to a bright future for SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR ) and SolarCity (NASDAQ: SCTY ) , which could really take off if a carbon tax became law.

More recently, I made a big bet that SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR ) would return to profitability and emerge as a solar industry leader. You can see my logic in late 2012 and my calculations that showed upside of $168 per share in February, when the stock was $11.45. Today, shares trade around $32, but I still think there's upside.
