How is it that Warren Buffett seems to be so good at picking stocks that increase their EPS year after year while automated screens tend to have much less success separating the companies that will continue to grow their EPS from those that simply had a good run for a decade or so but are now stalling out?
Someone sent me an email asking this very question.
I think it is helpful to look deeper than just the financial statements. Look inside the business. This seems to be something Warren Buffett does. The example I would give is Western Union (WU). This is a company where it looks like operating income is flat regardless of the economy:
2005: $1.27 billion
2006: $1.31 billion
2007: $1.32 billion
2008: $1.36 billion
2009: $1.28 billion
2010: $1.30 billion
2011: $1.39 billion
2012: $1.40 billion
However, that is only if you are looking at the bottom line. It is very misleading compared to what is actually happening in the business. The unit that matters the most to them is consumer-to-consumer transactions. And they break this out in terms of transactions and revenues. When you look at a spreadsheet with those numbers in it you see that until this most recent quarter, transactions always increased and prices always decreased.

There's no denying Tesla Motors Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) has been one of year's top investment stories, with shares running up from less than $40 to more than $194 in just a few short months. But, as one might imagine, that 385% runup from TSLA creates something of a disconnect between the company and its share price. Time to head for the exit. Instead, a better use of that now-considerably-greater capital is a position in Digital Ally, Inc. (NASDAQ:DGLY) ... a stock that's also had a pretty good 2014, but has suffered more than a small setback since mid-September. Specifically, DGLY has pulled back from a peak price of $17.47 to a low of $9.88 as of Friday. But, it looks like that correction may have already come to an end.

The first bit came from Herbalife bull William Stiritz, the CEO of Post Holdings(POST).
The market has viewed Post as a potential buyer of Herbalife, after Post’s CEO William Stiritz personally purchased a 6.7% stake in Herbalife. Last week one ofWall Street’s most bullish analystson Herbalife joined Post Holdings as an adviser, raising even more questions about whether the cereal company might bid for Herbalife.

Even peers such as Post Holdings (POST) were also facing similar problems of lower cereal sales. Post Holdings too reported its first quarter results recently which failed to meet analystsexpectations. Although its revenue grew 77% to $438 million over last year, the increase was mainly because of a host of acquisitions made by the company. In fact, revenue from Post Foods, which includes cereal business under the name of Post brand, fell 2.4% to $239.5 million.

Following the same line of logic, don't be surprised if Post (NYSE: POST ) Grape-Nuts soon carry the GMO-free label. They are currently marketing Vintage Grape-Nuts which do not contain the likely GMO-laden isolated soy protein that is found in their current formulation of the cereal. Presumably with a little consumer demand, the transition back to the original recipe would be easy and enable the GMO-free label.
